How to create group into your iPhone contact list
Aug 23rd, 2008 by Gyoo
Very surprising, but it is not possible to create group into the iPhone address book directly from the iPhone. The only way so far is to create them on your PC or Mac and synchronize it to the iPhone. After not possible to change a contact from one group to another or edit a group. Still you will need your Mac / PC address book to make the job. The only option on iPhone is to add a new user on an existing group.
On my side, I’m using Outlook. Into My Contacts, right click and select New Folder … to create a new group. After in iTunes the new group will appear and will be synchronize on your iPhone.
This really works?
Why is it that my address book from my Motorola Smart Phone which used Outlook Address book as its address book and allowed groups, which I had 15 or more created for my 200+ contacts, never did sync over correctly with the 3G?. The Outlook address book had many more fields for info than apple believes is needed by an iPhone user, I had lots of birthdates, spouses names, kids names, 2nd and 3rd addresses for many of my contacts, all lost now, at least on my mobile brain.
Hey friend,
Your article helped me get started in the right direction. I found out how to create the new folder groups. Now, how do I get info from contacts to new folder, “Parkway youth”? Also, if you can help me, how do I send mass texts to my groups in iphone? Example, I want to let all my youth group (50+) about this Friday night event, how do I send a text to all contacts in Parkway youth folder group?
I have been trying to resolve this, and your answer really helped me. I am hoping for further help in this matter. Thanks, Jason Dillon

Thanks a mill! This worked really great, I just purched a 3G and have 900 contacts using a PC with outlook. I created five groups. I am very pleased.
I used Tansee iPhone Transfer Contact to backup my iPhone contacts onto my pc. Work like a charm! If you need such a software to help you backup your contacts, you can click here to get more information..
If you have windows vista / 7, you could go to your contact folder on the computer. Then, there is an option on the top saying “create contact group” / “new contact”. You just have to create new contact group then add select the contact you want to add in the group. You can have as many contact groups you want. The good thing is that you don’t have to anything at all, just sync you iPhone. That’s it. It’s on the iPhone. alibx@yahoo.com
But can you get iPhone to select the whole group and send a text to every member of that group?
Thank you so much you saved me it did work wonderfully.
You can by using GroupSend on a Jailbroken phone. Easiest way is Spirit. (Google it)
Can someone post the steps please? I’m not sure how to do it and I don’t wanna loose my contacts which i’ve had for years…Thanks in advance!
Use something from cydia called abgrouper. It works well and intergrates with messages. The only thing is you cannot select all members of the group at once. You hav to manually insert all the members. But it only lists the members of that particular group so it’s not as bad as it sounds. Check it out. Remember you have to be jailbroken to access cydia.
but after creating a new group, the contacts duplicate in the list. wat to do bout that?
@DPaul: Are you referring to Outlook Categories? Unfortunately categories are not synced to your iPhone, but only the folders are.
@Jason: Fortunately with iOS4 SDK, developers are now able to provide this feature. We developed Tacts Contact Manager can send mass text and emails to contact groups. Tacts is easy to use and also allows provides full contact management features directly on the iPhone itself. You can check it out here: http://terntek.com/tacts/
You could alway create a contact and call it “…… Group” and then copy and paste all the peoples numbers into that contact and give each one a custom name. It worked for me
You might be interested in a new app, MailShot, that lets you create groups that you can then use just like a single contact all over your phone, this approach lets you do lots of neat tricks easily like forwarding links, locations or email to a group for example. Its free to try at the moment on http://www.itunes.com/apps/mailshot.
Check out these must have iphone apps includes Contacts Categories, and other great apps http://surreystore.com/cms/apple/34-must-have-iphone-apps.html
I created a group in my Yahoo email on my Mac, but I can’t get it to show up in my 4G iPhone. No one can seem to help me. I am at a loss. I am going to Africa in a few days and I wanted to be able to type in one contact name in my Yahoo email while there each day to alert friends/family of my whereabouts and what I’m doing (if I get reception for the iPhone at the hotels). Any help would be appreciated. Please note I don’t handle this Mac/Apple speak very well — I have synced everything and it still doesn’t show in my iPhone. Not even I.T. or social media people at work could help me. Thanks.
The iPhone needs to get some basics that most of the other s
Smart phones already have for years. I am thinking of swapping mine for a Blackberry.
i am a blogger everyday i browse different types of articles to get lots of new tips while i was browsing,i found ur blog your article is really awesome. Thanks for sharing such nice article here.i also want to share valuable how to build a list tips.
Agree with you, this is a shame not to have this feature, which is available even in low costs handsets.
Outlook sync is working, but painfull.
Another way to manage groups of contacts is to use 3rd party apps. Thanks to developpers for this job! I am using a free one called Easy Group. Here is iTune link for DL:
